Launching My Coaching Business on My Hearing Loss Anniversary!

August 29th, my hearing loss anniversary. Today marks 6 years since my loss. Every year on this day, I like to take some time to reflect on how far I’ve come since the day in the auditorium when the world to the left of me fell into silence.

I have just finished reading a blog post I wrote one year following my hearing loss, which sparked memories of the early days; my time in hospital, seeking second opinions, days spent on Google trying to find answers or new therapies that could bring back my old life. I was struggling to process the enormity of the situation—that I was now profoundly deaf in one ear.

A Life-Changing Experience

My sudden hearing loss was life-changing. During the last 6 years, I’ve learned how to advocate for myself and have become comfortable telling people about my hearing loss. I have fought limiting beliefs (that little negative voice in my head that tries to hold me back from accepting opportunities) related to my hearing loss, and now seek out and grab opportunities with confidence. I have realised my identity as someone with hearing loss and now have a clear view of the life I want to lead.

Perhaps, most noteworthy, I have carved out a new career path. With the classroom no longer being a safe environment for me to work (due to balance issues associated with my hearing loss), I ended my teaching career and embarked upon a journey of career exploration, which is when I discovered Transformational Coaching.

What is Transformational Coaching?

Transformational Coaching is a conversation and a relationship that explores your personal beliefs, values, behaviours, and purpose. It focuses on moving forwards, setting goals, and working towards achieving them.

For people with hearing loss, Transformational Coaching can be used to explore topics such as the following:

  • How to be your own advocate
  • Overcoming feelings of low confidence and/or isolation
  • How to enable effective communication with partners, friends, family, and colleagues
  • Moving forward positively with your hearing loss

And, so much more!

A New Career

Over the past 6 years, I have connected with people through my blog, my online support group and my website, all living similar experiences to mine. For 6 years, people have shared with me their struggles moving forward positively with hearing loss, and I have become passionate about raising awareness of the practical and emotional impact of hearing loss on everyday life.

I could clearly see how Transformational Coaching could be used to support people, with hearing loss, in remodelling their lives and achieving their goals. This was the career I had been searching for!

Pursuing My Goal

I trained with the Animas Centre for Coaching, which is fully accredited by the International Coaching Federation(ICF), the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), and the Association for Coaching (AC). And, in June 2022, I was awarded my diploma in Transformational Coaching.

Now, armed with a toolkit of coaching skills and techniques, I aim to support people, just like me, with hearing health issues, to make exciting changes in their lives!

My Hearing Loss Anniversary – A Time to Celebrate!

My mission is to help people affected by hearing loss, giving them the tools to empower themselves, move forward positively, achieve their goals, and live a life they are proud of.

  1. Hello Carly,

I met Roulla in Dublin last week and she told me about your new venture. Just wanted to wish you every success for the future. It is not easy starting up a new business and I hope everything goes well. Best wishes from Chris Parker.
